Sun., May 1--Start gathering old batteries, light bulbs, and electronics for recycling.


Mon., May 2, 6:00 - 7:00 P.M.--Garlic Mustard Pull Challenge Mondays.  At Eggers Grove Forest Preserve, E. 112th St. & Ave. E.

Meet John Pastirik near the caretaker’s house.   Volunteer to pull garlic mustard, an invasive species. Wear sturdy shoes, long pants, bring gloves.

Tue., May 3, 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.--Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) Partners presentation at Villa Guadalupe Senior Apartments, 3201 E. 91st Street.

There will be overviews by Claretian Associates, CNT Energy, CIC, Solar Service Inc, and the Energy Savers Program, a one-stop energy efficiency shop for multifamily building owners.  Presentations will include information about energy efficiency upgrades made to Villa Guadalupe building which will help maintain affordable and comfortable housing for seniors by reducing energy consumption and providing clean energy.  Resources are targeted to multifamily (2 units or more) rental building owners.  Event will conclude with a tour of Villa Guadalupe Senior Apartments


Tue., May 3, 4:00 P.M. - 5:00 P,M,--La Causa Community Committee Green Summit.  At 8630 S. Muskegon, Bessemer Park.

LC3 instructor and green team of youth will be disposing of litter around the park, cleaning the park’s nature garden, recycling all trash, and at the same time, teaching youth about keeping the environment clean.  Volunteerism is highly encouraged.


Wed., May 4, 9 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.--EverLights 10th Ward E-Waste Drive. At 10th Ward Alderman’s Office, 3522 E 106th St.

EverLights will be accepting computers, electronics, and related e-waste materials throughout the month of May. The material will be collected at the 10th Ward Alderman’s office for proper recycling by EverLights.  Call the Alderman’s office for office hours at: 773-721-1999.

Thu., May 5, 6:00 - 8:00pm--Chicago Southland Green Drinks. At Maple Tree Inn, 13301 S. Olde Western Avenue, Blue ISland IL.

Green Drinks is a bimonthly event focused on networking, education, and socializing. Green Drinks events around the world have helped people find employment, make friends, develop new ideas, seal deals, and have moments of serendipity.

Each gathering is different but we always provide a literature table so attendees can promote their events, a short program highlighting a special event or project, but most importantly there is plenty of time to reconnect with old friends and build new relationships.

Fri., May 6, 10:00 A.M. - 2:00 P.M.--Cinco de Mayo Senior Health & Resource Fair.  At Immaculate Conception Church 2944 E. 88th Street

The Cinco de Mayo Senior Health & Resource Fair will celebrate their 15th Annual Fair.  This event draws over 400 seniors from near and far.  There is live entertainment, raffles & prizes.  Each senior participant will receive a free lunch and there will be a host of vital free screenings including PSA screenings, blood pressure, diabetes, vision, cholesterol, memory screenings, bone density, and state id renewals.


Sat. May 7--“From Steel to Green 10th Ward Tour”. (Approximately 2 hours.)

First tour--9:00 A.M. – 11:00 A.M. -- Leaving from:  Villa Guadalupe, 3201 E. 91st Street.

Join Alderman John Pope as he guides us on the South Chicago Chamber’s Street Car.   Hear the history of Southeast Chicago and its transformation from the closing of the Steel Mills into a Greening Community. 

Second and third tours--11:00 A.M. and 1:00 P.M. (Approximate time: 1 hour each tour).  -- Leaving from:  Bowen H.S. front entrance, 2710 East 89th Street.

Streetcar Tour of South Chicago Green Buildings and Gardens.  Green buildings and at least two of the 8 community gardens will be covered.  Buildings range from energy-efficient to LEED-Gold. Tour covers 85th to 95th Street, from Lake Michigan to South Chicago Avenue. 

Tours are for participants at Bowen Centennial and Green Peace Day at Bessemer Park and to community.  [Presentations and slideshows of tour stops will be available on request.  Contact 773-375-2231 for information.]


Sat., May 7, 10:00 A.M. - 1:00 P.M.--TRACE hosts Green Peace Day,  At Bessemer Park, 8930 S. Muskegon Ave.

Chicago Park District’s TRACE (Teens Re-Imagining Art, Community & Environment) will host a series of activities that promote community-building and peace-making, including setting up a container garden (target: TRACE teens and South Chicago community members), a doll-making workshop (children ages 6 and up) , and a peace circle (TRACE teens and Bowen High School Safe Passage convene, all community members are welcome). CeaseFire “Stop the shooting, Stop the violence” parade.


Sat. May 7- 10am-2:00 P.M.--James H. Bowen Centennial Celebration.  At James H. Bowen High School (2710 E. 89th Street).

Bowen Alumni are invited to attend the school's Centennial Celebration on the campus at 2710 East 89th Street from10 a.m. to 2 p.m.   Mr. Rod Sellers, Southeast Chicago Historical Society Museum director, will present "Bowen: The Man and School." Restoration work will be done on the Campus gardens by BEST students under the guidance of Mr. William Smith and Mireles Academy's Green Team under Mrs. LaJuana Jackson. A short bus tour featuring South Chicago's green buildings and gardens will be available.

Thu., May 12, 10:30 A.M. - 12:00 P.M.--Community-based Retrofit Programs: Case Studies from Around the Country & What We Can Do in South Chicago.  At South Chicago Library 9055 S. Houston.

This presentation is part of the South Chicago Retrofit Project, led by Claretian Associates and the Spanish Coalition for Housing and funded by the Chicago Department of Environment. This presentation will review a number of case studies of community-based retrofit programs from around the country. It will conclude with a discussion about the South Chicago Retrofit Project and how the project’s approach compares to, can borrow from, and can expand other models.

Anyone who is interested in observing or even helping with Vegetable / Herb / Wildflower-Native Plant Garden maintenance throughout the growing season should join us. 

Volunteerism is highly recommended.


Sat., May 14, 12:00-2:00 P.M.--A Green Teen Tour-A-Palooza.  At Germano Milgate Community Center 8732 S. Burley.

Interns from Germano Millgate & Architreasures will produce, participate and present their own green tours of South Chicago. They have also designed this year’s green summit brochure. Local residents are invited to join our teen docents as they introduce community residents to the green, eco-friendly initiatives that will be offered in their community.

Residents, families and friends are invited to a 2-mile guided hike along the Greenway, from 112th Street to the Wm. Powers Conservation Area at Wolf Lake.  Bring cameras. *Bonuses:  Free family fun, face-painting, nature lessons, healthful eating tips, share your green tips, visit Red Riding's Hood, and more! Sat., May 14, 3:00 - 6:00 P.M.--Tree Keeping Demo and Springtime Walk.  At 107th & Avenue D, Chicago.

Join SETF and CEPA members for a breath of fresh air while you watch a tree mulching and pruning demo.  The demonstration will be followed by a leisurely springtime walk along the Burnham Greenway.  Event will culminate in a wiener roast.  This event is open to all ages and it is recommended that you bring a folding chair or blanket to sit on.    There are plenty of streets parking to be found.  Contact setf@sbcglobal.net for more details.

Mon., May 16, 7:00 P.M.--Chicago Velo Campus Community Meeting.  At Lakeside Development Marketing Building 8555 S. Greenbay.

Chicago Velo Campus will present updates on the interim wood track process which will be used for races starting this summer on the 87th Street and Burley parking lot with plans for a permanent site at 81st Street on the USX site using geothermal for heating and cooling as well as solar panels.

The Zone and g2g Church (Generation to Generation Church) will host an Out-door Celebration (Weather permitting) in honor of.  The Celebration will include an Environmental Presentation by our Youth with the assistance of the Field Museum.

Powderhorn Nature Preserve (13817-14451 S Brainard Ave, Burnham, IL 60633).

Help us clear invasive brush and pull invasive weeds at this beautiful site. Tools and gloves provided. Meet in the Powderhorn Lake parking lot on the east side of Brainard Avenue, just south of Burnham Avenue in southeast Chicago.

Sat., May 21, (Time TBA)--Ribbon Cutting for 100th Street Bike Path Link between the Lake Front Trail and Burnham Greenway.  At 100th Street and Avenue H.

The link between the Lake Front Trail and Burnham Greenway Location is 100th Street, between Avenues G to J, and through the viaduct to Ewing Avenue (US41).

Area residents and cyclists are invited to attend the opening of this link between the Lake Front Bike Trail and access to the Burnham Greenway.  10th Ward Alderman John Pope will preside.  Local residents and students will be invited to maintain the garden that will be created along the link.

Join Friends of the Parks and Claretian Associates to discuss a shared vision to link the Last four Miles and the completed south lakefront path with Calumet Park, the Burnham Trail and parks, natural areas and trails in South Chicago and the Calumet area.  Free and open to the public.

Sat., May 28, 9:00 A.M. - 4:00 P.M.--11th Annual Wolf Lake Bi-State Wetlands, Wind & Water Festival.   At William Powers Conservation Area, Shelter 2, 12949 S. Avenue O.

The Association for the Wolf Lake Initiative showcases Wolf Lake and surrounding natural areas as a resource for recreation, family fun, and helps foster bi-state cooperation.  Activities include:  Fishing clinic, kite flying, face painting, canoeing, birding, hiking/nature walk, wind surfing instructions, bike tour of Wolf Lake, student demonstrations, picnic lunch, sunrise service, tours, poster contest and campfires.

The 10th Ward Green Summit offers area residents a coherent presentation of currently available green, eco-friendly, and healthy initiatives designed to enhance the community's quality of life and, ideally, to promote economic development consistent with the community's cultural and economic diversity.


Family Fun, Gardening Workshops, Bike, Streetcar, and walking tours, Healthy Eating Demonstrations, Spring walks, Festivals, Healthy Block Clubs, Bicycle Maintenance, Growing Food, Community Gardens, Free Health Screenings, Teacher CDPU’s, Volunteerism, Community Events…..These are just a few of many green initiatives that are happening in the 10th Ward in May 2011.
